Our British Made Leather Belt Sizing Guide
CARV handmade leather belts are sized in inches. The length refers to the length of strap (taken from the point at which it loops around the buckle) to the hole. Holes are at 1 inch spacings and an extra 5 inches is added at the end of the belt. See the diagram below for an illustration.
As an example - On a 28 to 32 inch belt, the first (smallest) hole is 28 inches length and the longest hole is at 32 inches with three holes in between (at 29, 30 and 31 inches).
The standard CARV British made leather belt sizes are:
- 26-30 inches (XS)
- 28-32 inches (S)
- 30-34 inches (SM)
- 32-34 inches (M)
- 34-36 inches (ML)
- 36-38 inches (L)
- 38-42 inches (XL)
Custom sizing is available on request.
Sizing assistance:
To accurately assess your correct belt size (if you wear a belt with one type of jeans/trouser):
- Measure the circumference around the place on the body where you typically wear a belt (e.g. around the waist, on the hip high or on the hip low).
- Use this measurement for the smallest size and the largest size should be four inches above.
For example, if you measure 28 inches around the hip where you typically wear a belt select size 28 - 32 inches.
If you would like the flexibility to wear your belt in more than one place (for example high waist and also at the hip):
- Take your waist measurement and hip measurement.
- The waist measurement will be the smallest size and the largest size will be four inches above the hip measurement.
For example, if you want the flexibility to wear your belt with both high waist and mid rise jeans, your waist measurement is 26 inches and hip measurement is 28 inches, select size 26 - 32 inches.
If your size requirement is not in the standard range select the ‘custom’ option and leave a note on checkout with the required sizing.
If in any doubt we recommend sizing up. Smaller holes can be added if needed.

Why Choose a Handmade Leather Belt
A true mark of sophistication and timeless style, a handmade leather belt is more than just an accessory—it's a statement of quality, sustainability, and craftsmanship. Whether you're building a wardrobe filled with enduring classics or seeking thoughtful alternatives to fast fashion, investing in a handmade leather belt perfectly aligns with the values of both eco-conscious consumers and discerning men's fashion enthusiasts.
But what makes these belts so exceptional? This guide will explore the unmatched allure of handmade leather belts and why they deserve a place in your wardrobe—from their artisan craftsmanship to their environmental benefits and everything in between.
The Craftsmanship Behind Handmade Leather Belts
When you wear a handmade leather belt, you're not just buckling a piece of leather; you're showcasing authentic artistry. Handmade belts stand apart from their mass-produced counterparts due to the dedication and meticulous care put into their creation.
The Art of Leathercraft
Crafting a leather belt by hand is a skill that has been perfected over centuries. At its core, it involves selecting premium-quality leather, cutting it with precision, and stitching it with the utmost attention to detail. Unlike machine-made belts, where flaws can go unnoticed, each step in the handmade process is performed by an artisan whose experienced eye ensures every belt meets the highest standard.
Attention to Detail
Unlike factory-made belts churned out by the thousands, handmade belts feature intricate detailing that can only be achieved through manual labor. From hand-burnished edges to custom embossing, these subtle refinements enhance the beauty and individuality of each piece.
Superior Durability
Handmade leather belts are crafted to last. Artisans use full-grain leather—the strongest and most durable layer of hide that develops a rich patina over time. Complemented with reinforced stitching and high-quality hardware, these belts can withstand years of wear while looking increasingly distinguished.
Timeless Style That Elevates Any Look
Handmade leather belts are a wardrobe staple, capable of seamlessly complementing both casual and formal ensembles.
Versatility for Any Occasion
Whether you're dressing up for a business meeting, heading to a wedding, or elevating a weekend outfit, a well-made leather belt adds a refined touch. The natural grain and color variations in full-grain leather also give it a depth of character that pairs wonderfully with everything—from denim to tailored trousers.
Minimalist Elegance
Handmade leather belts often forgo unnecessary embellishments, emphasizing the beauty of simplicity. This minimalist approach ensures the focus remains on the quality of the leather and craftsmanship, creating an accessory that never goes out of style.
Customisation for a Personal Touch
Looking for a truly bespoke piece? Many artisans offer customisation, allowing you to select your belt's colour, buckle style, and even engraving. This ability to tailor your belt ensures it reflects your unique style while maintaining its timeless appeal.
A Sustainable Choice for the Eco-Conscious
Fast fashion is one of the world's largest polluters, but handmade leather belts offer an alternative rooted in sustainability and responsible production.
Ethical Craftsmanship
Artisans often source leather from small, ethical tanneries that prioritize sustainable practices. This reduces the environmental footprint of production and ensures that materials are used responsibly.
Longevity Reduces Waste
One of the most significant advantages of a handmade leather belt is its durability. While mass-produced belts often wear out and end up in landfills, these handcrafted alternatives are built to last. Their timeless style also ensures they won't be discarded due to fleeting trends.
Supporting Small Artisans
By purchasing handmade leather goods, you're supporting skilled artisans and small businesses rather than large-scale factories. This contributes to preserving traditional crafts while empowering local economies.
How to Choose the Perfect Handmade Leather Belt
Selecting the right handmade leather belt requires attention to detail and an understanding of a few key factors. Here's what to consider when making your choice.
1. Material and Leather Type
Opt for full-grain leather for maximum quality and durability. This material is the top layer of the hide, maintaining its natural texture and strength. Avoid "genuine leather," which may be lower quality.
2. Size and Fit
Handmade belts often allow for custom sizing. Measure your waist accurately and choose a belt size that provides enough room for slight adjustments while ensuring a snug, secure fit.
3. Construction and Hardware
Inspect the stitching—uniform, tight stitching indicates high craftsmanship. For the hardware, look for sturdy buckles made from materials such as solid brass or stainless steel, as these are less likely to tarnish or break.
4. Style and Versatility
Select a belt in a neutral colour, such as black, brown, or tan, to maximise versatility. Matte or slightly polished leather finishes can complement both formal and casual outfits.
5. Artisan or Manufacturer Reputation
Research the craftsman, brand, or atelier behind the belt. Feedback and reviews from other customers can provide insight into the quality and longevity of their products.
